Day 042: Shaping
Today we are shaping many kinds of small forms. The idea is to just get familiar with forming and playing with organic shapes. We shall make some small plant pots in different sizes and shapes. What kind of shapes you have in mind? What kind of techniques you can use for forming the dough? How fun it is to make your own collection of small plant pots for the window shelf and plant some seed to be later moved and planted outside when the summer is here for real!
You are free to create different kind of shapes and make your own collection of flower pots. You can also use different techniques in the process and also some tools and other shapes to help and make variations!
The fun process of making tiny flowerpots out of magic dough or paper pulp!
We have used “magic dough” as we call it in Finnish. Everyone should have the ingredients for it at home, so it is easy and what is best it is also all natural ingredients. There are some other options too, so if you happen to have a lot of old newspapers and prefer using them you can easily make paper pulp too. We have painted the tiny flowerpots to give a bit more character and identity after they were dry. Test it out too! Natural colours are cool too, so you may decide. The idea is that when we are using these natural materials there is an option to plant the bit bigger seedlings later in the spring outside in bigger planters or even in the flowerbed. While you are shaping your plant pots you can use different techniques like roll dough, “sausage” technique, pinching, balls or your own style?
“The Bobola magic dough” recipe:
3dl flours
1,5dl salt
1,5dl water
1 tbs cooking oil
+ a hint of love
If you can’t hold your horses waiting the form to dry and want to move on to the painting part faster, you can speed the drying process in the oven. Depending on the size of the small flowerpots keep them approximately an hour in 125degrees. Make sure they just dry not burn! After drying, you are free to colour them as you wish!
Another option is to make paper pulp out of some old newspapers, water and some natural glue or wallpaper paste. First shred the newspapers into small pieces, let them soak in the water over night and next day add some glue or wallpaper paste and mix it well! It is also a great material to shape some forms! Remember that paper pulp can’t be dried in the oven, so you need to keep it in the room temperature and wait until it is dry! After you are more than free to paint those flowerpots as well in multiple colours and patterns!
Have fun this is meditating!
Have a lovely day and a lot of fun creating your own collection of functional, fun and decorative tiny plant pots! Once the seedlings have grown big enough you can plant them outside! We are supper curious how your plant pots look like? You can share some images on Instagram with #bobolafi.
Take care and enjoy! Shaping and forming is cool!
Dear followers we want to remind you that parents assume all responsibility for the safety of their children in these activities.
