Day 041: Basic shapes and forms
Today we shall start getting more familiar with shapes and forms. In Finnish we only have one word describing both shapes and forms. We speak about muoto, when we are speaking about cubes or squares for example. Maybe it is very evident to all native speakers but I wanted to highlight the simple difference between shapes and forms. Shape is plain 2D like a circle and form is in 3D like cubes and spheres. Today we shall spot both 2D shapes and 3D forms. Forms are very important especially in architecture and design. Furthermore forms play and important role in arts as well, when we speak about sculptures and other 3 dimensional art pieces. Shapes are important in architecture for example on floor plans and such but also in design, like in graphics. In arts they play a crucial role too, we speak for example about compositions of different shapes in arts. Today we shall use the environment as a platform to do this activity, because there is still so much to explore and see around us. You can do this activity both inside or outside. If you are lucky enough to leave your home and go outside, enjoy the spring weather that gives a lot of energy!
These kind of basic shapes and forms we could spot, what can you find?
For this activity you need some pens and paper and of course open eyes! Let’s look around us again. What kind of shapes and forms you can find from your surroundings? You can challenge your friend to a friendly and playful competition to find as many tings in similar shapes and forms as possible. How many spheres, circles, cubes, squares and triangles you can find? If you are heading outside, take a notebook with you or take some pictures of your findings and draw them on an A4 paper once you are back home. Check out our collage of different shapes and forms we found outside. Have to say that it was quite an exciting activity for an adult too to try to spot as many basic shapes and forms as possible! Test it out; it definitely opens up new perspectives to the very ordinary environments!
Have fun!
