Is everything as we see things? Can colour combinations be actually something else than what we see? One of the Itten’s observations is called simultaneous contrast. It sounds very difficult, but it is actually not. It is actually very interesting aspect how colours act. Even if it is kind of a tricky thing but you keep your eyes open and concentrate on it for a while it is very cool thing. Some basic principles help you to understand the phenomenon. Simultaneous contrast basically means how colours are reacting when contrasted. We have created some simple examples to look at and observe. Is everything illusion or does it make sense? It might feel a bit tricky to grasp if just listening or reading something. The best way is to observe and experiment. Test out with some colours or coloured paper.

Is the gray are in the middle gradient as well or? How does it look like and why?

Blue, red and grey do they look any different? Why the colour looks gradient both in the background and on the coloured area on the front?

If you look at the dot in the middle of the colour surface. how it looks on the orange background and vise versa? How does it look on the blue? And why so?

How is the dot in the middle? Can you see any colour on it? This is a tricky one, but if you know what is the complementary colour of yellow? What it is? Purple maybe? Colours try to balance the situation by making the surrounded colour look like the complementary colour of the background. So if we look very carefully, maybe we can see a hint of purple?

How about this set of images. Do you recognize any difference in the colour of the figure in the middle? Is it depending on the background colour? Do you still remember all the complementary colors? That will help you in this case.
